As American peace activists working to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, we support the efforts of our colleagues in the Irish peace movement to draw attention to and to oppose the use of Shannon Airport by the Pentagon as part of the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In particular, we support the demonstration called by PANA & Shannonwatch for October 10, 2010, marking the ninth anniversary of the US invasion of Afghanistan.

Nothing has "changed" and AAW has much to protest :
France's inclusion in NATO and it's loss of independence, police violence in Strasbourg, the continuation of 2 wars waged by the US in Iraq and Afghanistan, the escalation of the US military's intervention in Pakistan and the killing of innocent civilians in all three of these countries.

CIA report into shoring up Afghan war support in Western Europe

This classified CIA analysis from March outlines possible PR strategies to shore up public support in Germany and France for a continued war in Afghanistan. After the Dutch government fell on the issue of Dutch troops in Afghanistan last month, the CIA became worried that similar events could happen in the countries that post the third and fourth largest troop contingents to the ISAF mission. The proposed PR strategies focus on pressure points that have been identified within these countries. For France it is the sympathy of the public for Afghan refugees and women. For Germany it is the fear of the consequences of defeat (drugs, more refugees, terrorism) as well as for Germany's standing in NATO. The memo is a recipe for the targeted manipulation of public opinion in two NATO ally countries, written by the CIA. It is classified as Confidential/No Foreign Nationals.

Ellsberg played a major role in efforts to end the Vietnam War in the 1970s. In 1971, the then-RAND Corporation analyst Daniel Ellsberg leaked to the media what became known as the Pentagon Papers, a 7,000-page classified history outlining the true extent of US involvement in Vietnam. After avoiding a life sentence on espionage charges, Daniel Ellsberg has continued to speak out against US militarism until the present day.

Today, 1 March 2010, the first session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine (RTP) will be held in Barcelona. The RTP is a peoples’ tribunal focusing not on Israel’s obligations under international humanitarian law (IHL) such as the Fourth Geneva Convention, but on the obligations of the international community of signatory states which sustain and enable Israel’s continuous violations of international law. This date also coincides with the 6th International Israeli Apartheid Week.

Israel is continuously violating the principles of the1949 Geneva Conventions that sought to ensure crimes against humanity would never happen again.

Who is Salah Hamouri ?
Salah Hamouri is a 24-year-old Franco-Palestinian who was arrested and sentenced to seven years in an Israeli jail. He’s a political prisoner like so many thousands of others but his mother is French. The mother has actually approached the Elysée in search of some good will for an intervention to free her son. And indeed why not? Except that there’s a double standard at work. A lot of people see very clearly that Sarkozy doesn’t mind going out on a limb to liberate Ingrid Betancourt, a Franco-Colombian, for political purposes of his own, but he seems much more reluctant to make a gesture for Salah Hamouri.

Dear committee members,

What peace could you possibly mean? Iraq is a status quo occupation and the Afghan/Pakistan theater is expanding. Iran, a signatory of the NPT, has been under constant threat from the U.S. as well as its European allies while Israel, who has some two hundred nuclear warheads and is not a signatory, continues without criticism. It would appear that you believe there are military solutions throughout the middle east, in which case I think you should recuse yourselves from any committee regarding peace.

President Obama has made a few elegant speeches ; after eight years of mangled orations from his predecessor, this does not seem to me very difficult. Words in matters of peace are nothing compared to action towards peace. Otherwise, Orwell's warning is now reality "War is Peace"!

It is the same mistake another assembly of this committee made in giving the prize to Henry Kissinger, a geostrategist whose disregard for human life is well-documented. This is appalling. Obama has done nothing but appease the hawks of the Washington consensus.

You have given him another weapon with which to continue these senseless wars.
