CIA report into shoring up Afghan war support in Western Europe

This classified CIA analysis from March outlines possible PR strategies to shore up public support in Germany and France for a continued war in Afghanistan. After the Dutch government fell on the issue of Dutch troops in Afghanistan last month, the CIA became worried that similar events could happen in the countries that post the third and fourth largest troop contingents to the ISAF mission. The proposed PR strategies focus on pressure points that have been identified within these countries. For France it is the sympathy of the public for Afghan refugees and women. For Germany it is the fear of the consequences of defeat (drugs, more refugees, terrorism) as well as for Germany's standing in NATO. The memo is a recipe for the targeted manipulation of public opinion in two NATO ally countries, written by the CIA. It is classified as Confidential/No Foreign Nationals.

The RTP is a peoples’ tribunal focusing not on Israel’s obligations under international humanitarian law (IHL) such as the Fourth Geneva Convention, but on the obligations of the international community of signatory states which sustain and enable Israel’s continuous violations of international law. This date also coincides with the 6th International Israeli Apartheid Week.

Israel is continuously violating the principles of the1949 Geneva Conventions that sought to ensure crimes against humanity would never happen again.

Salah Hamouri is a 24-year-old Franco-Palestinian who was arrested and sentenced to seven years in an Israeli jail. He’s a political prisoner like so many thousands of others but his mother is French. The mother has actually approached the Elysée in search of some good will for an intervention to free her son. And indeed why not? Except that there’s a double standard at work. A lot of people see very clearly that Sarkozy doesn’t mind going out on a limb to liberate Ingrid Betancourt, a Franco-Colombian, for political purposes of his own, but he seems much more reluctant to make a gesture for Salah Hamouri.

Dear committee members,

What peace could you possibly mean? Iraq is a status quo occupation and the Afghan/Pakistan theater is expanding. Iran, a signatory of the NPT, has been under constant threat from the U.S. as well as its European allies while Israel, who has some two hundred nuclear warheads and is not a signatory, continues without criticism. It would appear that you believe there are military solutions throughout the middle east, in which case I think you should recuse yourselves from any committee regarding peace.

President Obama has made a few elegant speeches ; after eight years of mangled orations from his predecessor, this does not seem to me very difficult. Words in matters of peace are nothing compared to action towards peace. Otherwise, Orwell's warning is now reality "War is Peace"!

It is the same mistake another assembly of this committee made in giving the prize to Henry Kissinger, a geostrategist whose disregard for human life is well-documented. This is appalling. Obama has done nothing but appease the hawks of the Washington consensus.

You have given him another weapon with which to continue these senseless wars.

"Is the subject of Palestinian human rights taboo inside the United States Government and its government-to-be? I hope not."

Today, November 23rd, I was slated to give remarks in Damascus, Syria at a Conference being held to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and, sadly, the 60th year that the Palestinian people have been denied their Right of Return enshrined in that Universal Declaration. But a funny thing happened to me while at the Atlanta airport on my way to the Conference: I was not allowed to exit the country.

I do believe that it was just a misunderstanding. But the insecurity experienced on a daily basis by innocent Palestinians is not. Innocent Palestinians are trapped in a violent, stateless twilight zone imposed on them by an international order that favors a country reported to have completed its nuclear triad as many as eight years ago, although Israel has remained ambiguous on the subject. President Jimmy Carter informed us that Israel had as many as 150 nuclear weapons, and Israel's allies are among the most militarily sophisticated on the planet. Military engagement, then, is untenable. Therefore the exigency of diplomacy and international law.

The Palestinians should at least be able to count on the protections of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What is happening to Palestinians in Gaza right now, subjected to an Israeli-imposed blockade, has drawn the attention of the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, who noted that over half of the civilians in Gaza are children. Even The Los Angeles Times criticized Israel's lockdown of Gaza that is keeping food, fuel, and medicine from civilians. Even so, Israel stood fast by its decision to seal Gaza's openings. But where are the voices of concern coming from the corridors of power inside the United States? Is the subject of Palestinian human rights taboo inside the United States Government and its government-to-be? I hope not.

So What Does the Peace Movement Do if the U.N. Mandate expires ?

The December 31, 2008 expiration of the UN mandate should lead to an immediate recognition of the illegality of the U.S. occupation. That acknowledged illegality should be seen as an opportunity to implement the clear will of the Iraqi people and a majority of the American people. The result should be immediate steps to return all U.S. troops to their bases, and begin the process of immediate withdrawal of not only combat troops but also U.S.-paid non-Iraqi contractors, and closure of the U.S. bases.

Although much of the nation's attention is captive to the current elections, there's an immediate need for a strong response against the latest round of negotiations that includes:

* Opposing any U.S.-Iraq agreement to maintain the U.S. occupation, whether it's for one month or three years.

* Opposing any such agreement being negotiated or signed without U.S. Congressional and Iraqi parliamentary approval.

* Rejecting interim measures designed to continue the occupation.

* Standing against any Security Council decision to extend the current mandate authorizing the U.S.-led occupation in Iraq; we call on the United Nations to stand with global civil society in defense of international law and its own Charter, to oppose the continuing occupation of Iraq.

07/08/08 "Huffington Post" -- - -What just happened? Evidence. A secret that has been judiciously kept for five years just spilled out. All of what follows is new, never reported in any way:

The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush — a man still carrying with $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush’s famous deck of wanted men — has been America’s secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, “resettled” Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money.

In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD — as Habbush had foretold — the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a “small team from the al Qaeda organization.”

The mission was carried out, the letter was created, popped up in Baghdad, and roiled the global newcycles in December, 2003 (conning even venerable journalists with Tom Brokaw). The mission is a statutory violation of the charter of CIA, and amendments added in 1991, prohibiting CIA from conduction disinformation campaigns on U.S. soil.

So, here we go again: the administration full attack mode, calling me names, George Tenet is claiming he doesn’t remember any such thing — just like he couldn’t remember “slam dunk” — and reporters are scratching their heads. Everything in the book is on the record. Many sources. And so, we watch and wait….

Yesterday, a 17-member delegation of Veterans For Peace presented some 23,000 petitions to Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), demanding the impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Conyers, chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary, is the Member of Congress with the authority to call for impeachment hearings.

Also Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to send the 35 Articles of Impeachment, submitted Monday evening by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) to the Judiciary Committee for consideration and hearings.

Organizers of Saturday's "NATO Game Over" protest say without the military organization, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would not be possible. They also oppose the use of nuclear weapons.

"Today is close to the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq and we are protesting against NATO's involvement and in particular European countries which are allowing themselves to be used as military hubs," anti-war campaigner Hans Lammerant told Reuters.

"NATO has 350 U.S. nuclear weapons deployed in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Britain and Turkey. According to international humanitarian law these weapons are illegal."
